Bayside Hapkido Newsletter July 2017
Welcome to July edition of the Bayside Hapkido Newsletter.
Can you believe it is already half way through the year and we are on the slide down to the end of the year?!
July is a great month for training with not much happening except a kids grading. However, the 2nd half of the year is just packed full of major events that are a must see. You can see all up coming events here: https://www.hapkidoqld.com.au/events/
Though here are the important ones to look at over the coming months:
Grand Master Seminar – August 2017
If there are 2 things of the year that mean a lot to me as the head instructor, it is Grand Master Visit and Gradings. Well, in August we have Grand Master coming up and we’re looking at making this event huge and the best ever. Though, we need the support of the students to do this. There will be more information on registration and payment information below.
ITS & Black Belt Grading – October 2017
We have all our international students flying into Sydney for our 2-yearly event called the ITS. This event is just amazing and we still have spots available for the week-long training. Also, you may or may not notice that the Provisionals are training hard and aiming to test in October 2017. Give them your support and if you don’t see them training hard give them a nudge.
Christmas Party – December 2017
It is that time again for the Christmas Party so lets make it a huge on this year as well. More details to follow though have a feeling it is going to be great.
Let’s keep training hard everyone and looking forward to helping you become better martial artist for the 2nd half of the year.

Training Tip
There is 2 types of students, one that want to tick a box and do the minimal possible to get their next belts and those who want to train and if a belt comes then that is part of the journey.
If you don’t get a signature then that means you need to put some more practice in. Set time to do this at home and before and after class. It will only help you get better, fitter and stronger as a martial artist.

Upcoming Raffle!
In the coming week, we will be handing out raffle tickets for anyone willing to take a small amount and sell them. Please get involved, whether that be taking tickets to sell, or buying some tickets for yourself. Details are below:
The cause:
Most of us know Chad; he’s a big part of our Bayside Hapkido community. Chad is the Kid’s Co-Ordinator, and can be seen setting up before classes, organising folders, signing people in and handing out tips.
Chad has been on a journey, suffering chronic pain for the last sixteen years due to complications in his legs. He was diagnosed with acute compartment syndrome in 2001 and underwent urgent fasciotomy surgery. He then had multiple surgeries between 2003 and 2009 on his legs.
Chad is now on a waiting list for this surgery with the private doctor Toby Cohen who specializes in specialised surgery and popliteal artery entrapment, which has given cases simlar to Chads’ relief. The first surgery will be on his left leg which is showing in scans to be the worst and then Chad will go through several months of rehabilitation before the surgery on his right leg.
We are raising funds to get this awesome member of our hapkido community the surgeries that will finally relieve his chronic pain. It will be a massive relief to Chad, but also his wife Trace and 4 children (3 of whom are also hapkidoists!!).
The raffle will be drawn on the 7th of July, 2017. This gives us the coming week to get tickets distributed, and 4 weeks of fundraising leading up to the drawing of the raffle.

Why did you start hapkido? Because I thought it would be fun and I wanted to be tough.
What is your favourite thing about hapkido/what is your favourite technique? Kicking the shields and doing techniques – probably everything! My favourite technique is side fall.

How long have you been doing hapkido and what colour is your belt? I’ve been doing hapkido about 4 years. I got to Jarrah belt in Hawks and I’ve just graded to Falcons, so I’m a white belt.
Why did you start hapkido? I watched an episode of Prank Patrol where a kid pranked his karate class, and it looked really fun. I wanted to do a martial art so I could prank my class too, so I joined and I really liked it so it stuck!
What is your favourite thing about hapkido/what is your favourite technique? I like hanging out with my friends and meeting new people, because it’s such a great experience. I like all self-defence, especially S-locks and V-locks, and my favourite strike is hooks.
Tell us some hobbies you have outside of class… I swim 2 hours a week and I play the clarinet.
What is your favourite movie or TV show? I have so many …Call The Midwife, Dr Who, MasterChef and MKR, and my favourite kids show is from when I was little – Octonauts!

How long have you been doing hapkido and what belt are you? I’ve been doing hapkido 3 years and I’m currently blue belt.
Why did you start hapkido? My son was the first to join 4 years ago. I used to watch him in his Hawks class and think how much fun it looked, and how awesome it would be to learn, then one Friday night as a family class was about to start I decided I couldn’t just watch any longer, so I stood up and said ‘Can I join in?’ Now the whole family trains!
What is your favourite part of hapkido? My favourite part of hapkido is assisting in the kids classes and gradings. I love seeing the kids build their confidence and self-esteem, and they’re learning a really useful life skill. I also love the family atmosphere and team spirit amongst the adults.
What is your favourite hapkido technique? My favourite technique is hand attacks – so simple and effective!
What do you do when you’re not training? I write online articles for Families Magazine and I have my own online jewellery business.
What is your favourite movie? Probably Sherlock Holmes – the one with Robert Downey Jnr and Jude Law. I like Guy Ritchie’s style of directing, all his movies are great.
What is your favourite quote? First, Do No Harm. Tolerance, patience, kindness, positivity etc. can go a long way towards making the world a better environment, so I always think if you can help in some way, do, and if you can’t don’t make things worse!
